Hong Kong has one of the world’s most efficient and comprehensive public transport systems.
MTR (Mass Transit Railway)
10 heavy rail lines plus the Light Rail network. Hours: approximately 6:00–1:00 daily. Fares range from approximately HK$4 for short hops to HK$20+ for longer journeys. Cross-harbour trips are approximately HK$10–12.
Key lines include the Tsuen Wan Line (Central to Tsuen Mun), Island Line (along the north shore of Hong Kong Island), and Tung Chung Line/Airport Express.
Trams (Ding Ding)
Hong Kong Island’s iconic double-decker trams have been running since 1904. Flat fare of HK$3 — slow but scenic. Board at the back, pay with Octopus upon exit at the front.
Buses and Minibuses
Double-decker buses (KMB, Citybus, NWFB) cover areas not served by the MTR. Distance-based fares. Minibuses are 16/19-seat vans with fixed or variable routes.
Ferries
The Star Ferry (since 1888) connects Tsim Sha Tsui to Central and Wan Chai for HK$4–5. Ferries to outlying islands (Lantau, Cheung Chau, Lamma) are operated by other companies.
Octopus Card
The Octopus Card is universal: buy at any MTR station for HK$150 (HK$50 refundable deposit + HK$100 value). Tap on MTR gates, bus readers, trams, and ferries. Also works at convenience stores and many restaurants. Mobile Octopus is available on iPhone/Apple Watch.
Since 2025, contactless Visa/Mastercard works on MTR gates, but NOT on buses/trams/ferries — Octopus is still essential.
