Longer read

Parking in Hong Kong is expensive and spaces are limited, especially on Hong Kong Island.

On-Street Parking

  • Metered pay-and-display: HK$4 per 15 minutes
  • Strict no-parking zones throughout the city
  • No parking on lit roads outside designated spaces
  • Illegal to park on pavements, pedestrian ways, or verges

Government and Public Garages

  • Approximately 4,000 spaces across 10 government-operated garages
  • Hourly: HK$15–25 (day), HK$13–19 (night)
  • Quarterly permits: HK$6,600–13,050 (lottery-based assignment)

Private Garages

  • Monthly: HK$1,500–12,000 depending on area (Sai Kung cheapest, Mid-Levels most expensive)
  • Housing Authority lots: HK$17–24/hour, monthly HK$1,500–3,000

Enforcement

Towing for illegal parking. Meter fees were doubled in 2025–26 to discourage long-term meter occupancy.

Recommendation

Do not drive in central Hong Kong. The MTR and bus networks are comprehensive and cheaper than parking for even a few hours.
